A Usable Solution Has to Include Something You Control
If your solution requires them to change, watch this.
Many relationship “solutions” are really wishes for someone else to become clearer, kinder, more available, or more consistent. Those changes may happen, but they cannot be the only mechanism in a plan you need to use now.
What part of this solution would still work if the other person changed nothing at all?
What to notice
- Whether your plan is actually a request for them to change
- Whether you have named the access or participation you control
- Whether your next action is specific enough to carry out without another conversation
Common trap
Writing a boundary that is secretly an instruction for the other person. “You need to…” may describe a request, but it does not yet define what you will do with the answer or behavior you receive.
Try this now
Rewrite the solution without using “they need to” or “they should.” Start with: I will ask…, I will participate in…, I will not…, or If this repeats, I will….
Example
Example: “They need to communicate consistently” becomes usable when translated into “I will not make plans that require certainty until a plan is confirmed by a specific time.”
KNOWN
- What you are willing to ask for clearly
- What access or participation you can change
- What action you can take if the pattern repeats
UNKNOWN
- Whether the other person will understand your position
- Whether they will choose or behave differently
PATTERN
A solution that depends entirely on another person changing keeps your next step outside your control and can prolong the same unresolved loop.
BOUNDARY
Build the response around your side of the line: what you participate in, what access you provide, and what you will do next.
NEXT ACTION
Choose one concrete action you can take even if the other person does absolutely nothing differently, and make it proportionate to the pattern you can observe.
