Before You Text Them: PAUSE
Before you send the message, PAUSE.
The urge to text can feel like a communication problem. Often it is decision pressure: you want relief, reassurance, movement, or certainty now. PAUSE slows the moment down long enough to separate the urge from the evidence.
If I send this, am I responding to new evidence—or asking contact to make uncertainty feel better?
What to notice
- PATTERN — what usually happens after you reach out in moments like this
- ACCESS — what door the message reopens, including checking and monitoring
- URGE — what feeling you want the message to change
- STANDARD — what you would consider reasonable if you were calmer
- EVIDENCE — what observable information actually supports acting now
Common trap
Treating emotional urgency as proof that communication is necessary. A strong urge can be real without being new evidence.
Try this now
Open your Notes app and write one sentence each for Pattern, Access, Urge, Standard, and Evidence. Then ask: If I wait 20 minutes, does anything important become worse? If not, wait long enough for urgency to stop pretending it is clarity.
Example
Example: “I just want to check in” may sound like a simple message. If nothing changed and the usual pattern is that you reach out whenever distance feels uncomfortable, the real job of the message may be relief rather than information.
KNOWN
- What happened immediately before the urge to text
- What the contact pattern has repeatedly produced
- Whether anything material changed since the last contact
- Whether there is a real practical question, deadline, or coordination need
UNKNOWN
- How they will respond
- What their response would secretly mean
- Whether contact will create the relief, reassurance, or certainty you want
PATTERN
A message never enters a vacuum. It enters an existing pattern, and that pattern should count before urgency makes the decision.
BOUNDARY
Do not let emotional pressure decide how much access, attention, or contact you reopen.
NEXT ACTION
Run PAUSE before sending: Pattern → Access → Urge → Standard → Evidence. Then decide whether to send, rewrite, answer only the practical part, wait, or do nothing.
